Japanese Bookbinding Class - Supply List

Button BookOne Day

An adaptation of traditional Japanese methods for fabric construction.
We will make one large (A5 size) and one small book. I provide paper, boards, binding threads, and can lend some tools.

Class supply list:-
Please bring
Fabric:-
Two pieces at least 7 inches by 10 inches to line your book; (fat quarter)
Two pieces the same size for the back cover and edges of the front; (fat quarter)
One piece of calico or sheeting (cotton) the same size to foundation piece the front cover onto;
Scraps in toning or contrasting colours to decorate the front cover: please be prepared to share.
Nice fabric for the small book - two pieces about A4 size.

Fabric should be light to mediumweight, closely woven, and preferably natural fibres. Cotton is ideal. If you wish to use a slippery, thin, or loosely woven fabric, please bring enough iron-on interfacing to cover 3 A4 sheets. If you wish to use heavy fabric (velvet etc) please bring a matching or toning lighter weight fabric to work the edges.
You may want to decorate your book with lace, embroidery, felt or other work, if so, please bring pieces with you. These should be finished- it is difficult to add to a book once completed.

Scissors, sewing thread, 18/20 tapestry needle, pins and general sewing equipment, ruler.

While the book can be hand sewn, I would prefer that you bring sewing machine with a standard and a zip foot; threaded in a neutral or matching colour and with a bobbin wound, ready to go.
Sewing machines do not have to be fancy, we will use only straight stitches, so hand-powered machines are suitable. If you do not have a sewing machine, please let me know.

If there is anything you don't understand in this list, please ring or email me..
